Fans at a Buju Banton concert in San Francisco, California, were pepper sprayed by an unknown person inside the venue. The incident occurred on Monday Oct. 12. According to sfweekly.com, someone, apparently, discharged the pepper spray right in the middle of the dance floor. Three of Buju’s backup singers were, apparently, affected also, Gramps Morgan of Morgan Heritage who was the opening act, was affected.
Remember, Buju Banton is under pressure from Gay rights Activists in the U.S.A . Earlier in the day (Oct. 12) Banton and his manager, Tracii McGregor, had a meeting with a gay rights group. It is not known if the incident was related.

Despite the hype, the Gargamel is reporting major success with his “Rasta Got Soul” US tour which kicked off last month in Philadelphia. Promoters are already calling it the biggest selling Reggae tour of the year based on the show of support from fans.

Seems like Buju is gearing up to take on the gay rights activists that recently campaigned to have his North American shows canceled. According to sflcn.com, Buju is using Facebook to form the ‘We Support Buju Banton’ group. So far about 500 or so members have signed on. Reports are that Buju’s North American tour is still on at many venues; this according to Buju’s Gargamel Music.
How do you think this will turn out? Don’t you think Buju has more support from his fans? As I’ve commented before, sometimes artists looking to branch out in North America or anywhere outside of Jamaica for that matter, in order to further their careers, sometime have to bite their lips and just go with the flow from a business stand point. Some of these artists reached that consensus in 2007 when they signed the the Reggae Compassionate Act agreeing to denounce homophobia. Now, some of them claimed they didn’t sign it, but we’ll leave it at that. I guess that was not enough for the activists. Oh well! You can’t win them all.
Buju Banton Arrested: Mek Wi Rally Di Troops!

Let me start out by saying that as you continue to read this commentary, you will notice that it is a very biased opinion in support of our Jamican product and icon Buju Banton.
Now, we do not condone any form of law breaking, but in the case of Buju Banton’s recent arrest, I saw this coming not, specifically, the apparent drug charge, but that the system was going to get him one way or another. This is what the Gay Rights community was wishing for and they are jumping in ecstasy out their shoes. Search news articles on Google and see for yourself.
Now that being said, unlike artists in America who keep their fans up to date on the events that could affect their fan base, Buju Banton’s representatives are not updating any of his fan base connections i.e. FACEBOOK or MYSPACE. If even to disseminate information to counteract the fight that’s being brought to Buju.
They need to realize that just like in politics if you can rally the people behind you, you stand a better chance of withstanding the attacks or ease the blows.
We learned that Buju Banton was arrested on an apparent drug related charge last Thursday by the “Feds”, and still to this day, nothing from his camp. In the interest of trying to find out more information, we attempted to contact his representatives without success.
So I say to Gargamel Music, release something to the fans on his FACEBOOK (75641 fans) and MYSPACE (107355 friends) pages to rally the troops!
