LAST month, inside a sprawling new tourist resort on the Montego Bay coast, Tarrus Riley did the near impossible: He and his seven-piece band, anchored by the Jamaican saxophone virtuoso Dean Fraser, transformed an antiseptic, fluorescent-lighted, air-conditioned hotel ballroom into a sweaty reggae dance party. Mr. Riley, a 30-year-old Rastafarian singer-songwriter, was celebrating the imminent release of his third album, “Contagious” (VP Records), a diverse collection of songs that reveal the complexity and richness of a genre often dismissed as monotonous. On August 04, 2009 Tarrus Riley’s new album, Contagious, hit the stores with much anticipation.
Although, this is his third album, Tarrus Riley is by no means a newcomer to the business. The 30-year-old recorded his debut single at age 15 and, as you may already know, is the son of reggae icon Jimmy Riley, better known for his perennial classic hit tune “Love and devotion,” produced by the Riddim Twins, Sly and Robbie, in 1982.
Tarrus Riley’s sophomore album Parables, released in 2006, spawned several hits, most notably the hit single “She’s Royal,” which catapulted his career into the big leagues.
Contagious features collaborations from notable artists such as, Etana, Vybz Kartel, Konshens and others.
The album was produced by Jamaican musical legend and saxophone virtuoso, Dean Fraser, on the Canon Production label and distributed by VP Records.
Rowan Irie: My favorite selection from the CD is track 16-Good Girl Gone Bad.
