Busy SignalEver so often you come across an artist from the contemporary reggae/dancehall scene who could, potentially, become the next heavy-hitter mainstream player, then they later fade from the radar screen and are somewhat relegated to the one-hit-wonder status, case in point, I Wayne, Gyptian, Nanko and others.

These artists are the new young faces of reggae/dancehall music and for reasons unknown they just do not get the push required to elevate their talent to that of other mainstream artists like those who have gone before them, Super Cat, Beenie Man, Shabba Ranks, Shaggy, Sean Paul and now Mavado.

It begs the question whether the Jamaican reggae/dancehall scene is organized enough to facilitate artists development. More below the fold…

According to NYDailynews.com ,  invited guest  Beenie Man and company caused quite a commotion outside Alicia Keys’ album release party for “Element  of Freedom” at a NYC venue on Wednesday night.

Apparently, he showed up at the party with more people than the venue could accommodate at one time, and reportedly demanded they all get in at once. One onlooker reportedly saw about 20 people accompanying Beenie Man to the event.

Of course, who would say no to the “Dancehall King.”

Caribbean Panel Discuss Reggae Artists Vs. Gay Activists

On Saturday, October 17th, a local Caribbean radio station in South Florida, WAVS 1170 A.M., will address the issue of  Gay activists and their mission to silence Reggae artists they deem homophobic. The show will air from 4pm to 6pm and streamed live at www.WAVS1170.com.

The guest panel will include Reggae icon Freddie McGregor, Marriage and Family Therapist Joy McKenzie, Music Historian Abdul Muhsin, Promoter Andrew Minott, Financial Advisor Daxx Dunn, and a representative from the Gay community.To get involved they will be taking calls at 954 792-1170.

This is taking place ahead of a major reggae concert in Miami, Florida, dubbed “Reggae Bash 2009,” where artists Buju Banton and Beenie Man, along with several others, are scheduled to perform on Saturday, Oct. 31 at the James L. Knight Center.

Already, there are major protests planned by Gay rights activists to disrupt or cancel the show as they have done in the past.

Reggae vets to be honoured

Freddie McgregorVeteran reggae crooners Freddy McGregor, Ken Boothe and Sugar Minott, who have collectively blessed the world with some of the biggest reggae classics, will each be honoured with lifetime achievement awards for their outstanding contribution to the reggae industry.

Executives of Irie Jamboree, which is North America’s premier reggae festival, made the announcement recently. The awards will be presented at the 7th annual Irie Jamboree on Labour Day – Sunday, September 6 – at York College Outdoor Complex in Queens, New York.

Grammy winners Shaggy and Beenie Man will both receive the ‘Irie Jamboree Reggae Soldier Award’, while New York-based veteran dancehall DJ Mikey ‘Mac Daddy’ Jarrett, who in 1983 was crowned ‘Dancehall King of Brooklyn’ will be honoured with the ‘New York Industry Award’ (NYIA).
