One Minute Spotlight: VP Records

Reggae Mix Online

The quintessential independent record label and distributor of reggae music, VP Records has “become a crucial link between reggae music and culture and an ever-growing market of reggae enthusiasts around the world.”

Based in Jamaica, Queens, NY, the place where it all began in 1979, VP Records has grown to become a force to be reckoned with within the reggae music industry.

“While there are other labels available to artists in the Caribbean and the United States, many seek out VP Records because of its successful track record.”

The story of VP Records is summed up in today’s One Minute Spotlight in this, previously released, feature video. Enjoy!

VP Records: The Biggest Reggae One Drop Anthem 2009 CD Review

Reggae Mix Online

Just
to let you know, my system of reviewing and recommending CDs is unconventional. If I get bored after one spin it goes into the “never listen to again” CD box. Yes, I do have one of those (actually, it’s a shoe box…alright. enough with the smirk, man!)

Now, with that being said, have you had a chance to listen to VP Records’ Biggest Reggae One Drop Anthems 2009 CD? I previewed it online and, eventually, went out and bought the CD because it was that good!

This VP Records release is one you draw for every time you power up your CD player, and must put it in repeat play mode. The list of artists on this CD is exceptional, and trust me, you will not be disappointed.

One thing though, track 07-Beres Hammond-Can’t Say I Never Tried, has the longest verses I ever heard, to the point of monotony. Beres Hammond…get to the damned chorus (hook), would you? -One love Beres, one love, mon! :)

Other than that, Reggae Mix Online readers, I, highly, recommend you get this CD. It’s a must have to add to your collection.

Happy listening, stay reggae!

Soundscan 2009 Reggae Album Sales Not Looking Good

Reggae Mix Online

Soundscan reggae album sales for 2009 trended downwards, drastically, which is not unlike that for other genres. But this should be a red flag to artists, producers and record labels alike that the music they are putting out is a little above CRAPOLA!

Where are the Coxsone Dodds, Joe Gibbs, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perrys, Sly & Robbies and Steely(r.i.p) and Clevies.

Don’t blame the economy, music fans now get to choose which songs on an album they want to purchase. Record companies no longer get to tell us as consumers what to buy. It’s no wonder online music services are growing year over year.

Major record companies are dying a slow death and are becoming irrelevant. I say death to major ’slave’ labels.

Artists and labels listen up. We need good music!

The Best Reggae Podcast Mix Sites On The Internet

Reggae Mix Online

You may not have known this but Reggae Mix Online was originally a reggae music podcast site where you could stream or download weekly reggae shows of nothing but the best vintage and contemporary reggae music. These shows were hosted and recorded live by yours truly (that’s me if you’re still scratching your head.)

As much as I enjoyed doing the podcasts, the weekly shows became a bit of a stretch as I was already involved in several other projects which left the studio availability sporadic. I eventually, made the decision to cancel the podcasts and take Reggae Mix Online in another direction less time consuming while maintaining the reggae vibes.

I started surfing the Web for sites that podcasts the style of reggae music I like and there are plenty. But how do you narrow it down to just a few you can bookmark. I prefer sites that allow some form of interaction with other members.

Well, here are my two choices though not conclusive as I make new discoveries as the list of podcasters get even longer.

Rhythmupdate.com is hosted by a guy called ‘Joshua B’. He plays really good mix of reggae selections. According to his website he got introduced to reggae while in high school after hearing ‘Red Red Wine’ by U.K. reggae band UB40.

Bigupradio.com Has a list of free online radio stations with lots of reggae mixes for your liking. As the website states, if you are new to reggae music you can simply tune in and by paying attention to the stations playlists and you will expand your knowledge of reggae artists and their work.

Help me to create a best of list so I can compile them and make the list available on its own page for all. Submit your favorite reggae podcast site here.

Boris Gardiner-Every Nigger is a Star

Reggae Mix Online

boris_gardiner

“It is my gut feeling that the word hurt a lot of people and it is best to keep it from the ears of many. It is best it stays where it is. I not going to push it.”

-Boris Gardiner told the Jamaican Gleaner on his refusal to perform ‘Every Nigger is a Star’ which was, originally, a contribution to the soundtrack of a 1970’s movie with the same title.
